GRI Boards

GRI has a two-tier board structure to ensure the effective governance of the organization, comprising a Management Board and a Supervisory Board. The updated governance structure was announced in October 2021.  

Management Board

GRI is led by a Management Board, responsible for policy and management of the organisation, which consists of:

  • Eelco van der Enden, Chief Executive Officer 
  • Bastian Buck, Chief Standards Officer
  • Lars Wagemans, Interim Chief Financial Officer
  • Cristina Gil White, Chief Operational Officer
  • Olivia Swartz, Chief People Officer

Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board provides oversight and advice to the Management Board. Appointments to the Supervisory Board reflect multi-stakeholder membership and are on a voluntary basis.

Members serve a term of three years. The membership is refreshed on a regular basis with a global public call for applications.

Ms. Jessica Fries (Chair)

A4S, Chief Executive, UK
Appointed Chair: 1 April 2023
1st term expires: 31 December 2025

Since 2008, Jessica has led Accounting for Sustainability (A4S), working with the finance community to catalyze a shift to a sustainable economy. She has been responsible for establishing the International Integrated Reporting Council, A4S’s CFO Leadership Network and capital markets program.
Previously, Jessica worked for PwC advising companies, governments, investors and not-for-profit organizations. She has written extensively on integrating sustainability into business and has been a member of various international, European and UK Government committees.
She is currently a member of the IIRC Governance and Nominations Committee, the Smith School Global Sustainable Finance Advisory Council, and the UN Global Assessment Report Advisory Council.
A chartered accountant, Jessica is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and is an alumnus of the London School of Economics and the University of Cambridge.

Mr. Bola Adeeko (Vice Chair)

Bola will provide the executive leadership for the initiation and flawless execution of all critical business growth initiatives to achieve our five-year strategic plan. A seasoned business leader, he has a track record of over 25 years with global companies, including Sara Lee Corporation, First Data Corporation,  JP Morgan Chase and most recently the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
Bola is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors, Nigeria, and holds several non-executive director positions. An Associate of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, he is an alumnus of Harvard Business School and INSEAD.

Ms. Esther An

City Developments Limited (CDL), Chief Sustainability Officer, Singapore
Appointed: 1 January 2021
2nd term expires: 31 December 2026

Esther is an advocate for green building and sustainability and is responsible for CDL’s sustainability leadership, which in 2020 was ranked the top real estate company in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World. She played a pivotal role in the establishment of GRI’s ASEAN Hub in 2019 and is a founding member of GRI ASEAN Consortium.
In 2018, she was recognized by UN Global Compact as a SDG Pioneer, and she is also the founder of the Women4Green and Youth4Climate initiatives. Esther’s board roles include the World Green Building Council, Asia Pacific Real Estate Association, and Global Compact Network Singapore.

Ms. Tinuade Awe

NGX Regulation Limited, CEO, Nigeria
Appointed: 1 January 2024
1st term expires: 31 December 2026
Ms. Awe is a lawyer, admitted in Nigeria and New York. She is the CEO of NGX Regulation Limited, the independent regulatory subsidiary of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc. She was on the Board of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Nigeria for two terms. She is a member of the FRC’s Adoption Readiness Working Group for the Adoption of the International Sustainability Standards Board’s IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 in Nigeria. She attended Obafemi Awolowo University, Harvard Law School, and The London School of Economics and Political Science. She enjoys art and travelling.

Mr. Bruno Bastit,

Bruno is the global corporate governance lead and sustainability research director at S&P Global Ratings. He also sits on the ICGN’s Natural Capital Committee. Previously, he founded Quetzal Strategy, an emerging markets-focused sustainability consultancy and was the head of Latin America at Morrow Sodali where he advised boards and C-suites on governance. He previously worked in responsible investing at Hermes Investment Management, and in ESG research. He graduated from Durham University in Middle Eastern Studies, has a Masters in International Political Economy from Warwick University, and holds certificates in governance, sustainability and investor relations.

Mr. Aaron Brenner

United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, Senior Analyst, USA
Appointed: 1 January 2024
1st term expires: 31 December 2026
Aaron Brenner is Senior Analyst in the Capital Stewardship Program at the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, which has 1.3 million members in the US and Canada. He helps the CSP spearhead efforts to protect retirement security, promote responsible investment, and ensure corporate accountability. He serves on the board of directors of Homeland Stores, an 80-store grocery chain based in Oklahoma. He earned a B.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. 

Dr. Helena Broadbridge

Deloitte, Partner, Denmark
Appointed: 1 January 2024
1st term expires: 31 December 2025
Helena Broadbridge has spent 20+ years working worldwide with companies in the interface of sustainability impacts, risk management, and reporting. She brings extensive practical understanding of sustainability and integrated reporting as well as assurance, combined with long-term governance experience. She has chaired several governance bodies of the GRI (2014-2023) and is a former member of the Standards Board of AccountAbility. Helena is a Partner in Deloitte. She holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Stellenbosch.

Ms. Christie Constantine

Appointed: 1 January 2024
1st term expires: 31 December 2026
For more than 20 years, Christie has worked to promote a wide range of social justice and environmental issues across the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia. She was most recently the Global Director of Sustainability at the law firm of Baker McKenzie. Prior to that, she was the Creative Director for Virgin Unite, Sir Richard Branson’s charitable foundation in London. She has also worked as a refugee advocate with the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights in New York and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Ms. Jane Diplock AO

Appointed: 1 January 2024
1st term expires: 31 December 2025
Jane has extensive governance experience, having chaired or served on boards of listed, unlisted, private and not for profit entities globally.
Since retiring as  Chairman of IOSCO and the New Zealand Securities Commission in 2011, her portfolio focus has been on global finance and regulation, audit, ethics and sustainability standard setting and reporting, and digitisation including AI.
Her current roles include; Ambassador World Benchmarking Alliance, Director Singapore Regulation Pte Ltd, Vice President Abu Dhabi Appeals Board, Member Advisory Board A4S, Member Sustainability Advisory Board Persefoni AI Inc. and Trustee Wellington Zoo Trust.

 

Mr. Ede Ijjasz

Appointed: 1 January 2024
1st term expires: 31 December 2026
Mr. Ijjasz is a senior nonresident fellow at the Brookings Institution and advisor to several international organizations in the areas of sustainability, ESG, finance, and climate change adaptation. He retired from the World Bank after a 23-year career where he was part of the senior leadership team for sustainable development, infrastructure, and environmental and social safeguards policies. Mr. Ijjasz has a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has been a lecturer at Tsinghua University in Beijing, Johns Hopkins University, and Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He serves on several private and not-for-profit boards. He is a Colombian and Hungarian national.

Dr. Daniel Klier

CEO, ESG Book, UK
Appointed: 1 January 2024
1st term expires: 31 December 2026
Dr. Daniel Klier joined ESG Book as Chief Executive in June 2021. ESG Book is a leading ESG data and technology company with offices in Boston, London, Frankfurt, Delhi, Singapore and Tokyo.
Prior to this, Daniel was Global Head of Sustainable Finance for HSBC, where he developed the global climate strategy for the bank and led the sustainable finance business across the bank. Daniel chaired the Bank of England Climate Risk Working Group and the Sustainable Finance Working Group at the Institute of International Finance. He is a member of the Board of Sustainable Energy for All.
Daniel joined HSBC in 2013 as Group Head of Strategy in London, following a successful career at McKinsey & Company where he was a Partner. In 2016, Daniel was selected as Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum.

Dr. Jianzhong Lu

INNIO Group, Chief Strategic Partnership

Dr Lu is a pioneer of sustainable business strategy and a respected industry thought leader. He has performed in senior executive roles for more than 20 years in a variety of international organizations and multi-national companies including President General Affairs of Greater China of Essilor, President of The Weir Group (China), Global Partner of Brunswick Group, Executive Vice President of Singapore RGE Group, and Acting President China of BHP Billiton.
Dr Lu is currently deputy director of the Sustainability Committee of China Management Science Society, Deputy Director General of China CSR Think Tank, Chairman of the Decision Board of the Shanghai Foreign Invested Association, a panel expert of the China Federation of Industries and Economics, Member of Chinese Environment Protection Federation, and member of UN Responsible Education Committee (China), Leader of ESG Disclosure Standard Expert Committee (Shanghai).  He was the former co-chair of the Sustainable Business Committee of the Shanghai American Chamber and the Shanghai British Chamber, and Chairman of the China ESG Award of British Chamber 2022-23.
Dr. Lu is a guest professor at the Nankai University, Zhejiang University, Hong Kong University, Shenzhen Institute of International Philanthropy Management and an alumnus of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Ecole Central de Paris, and Zhejiang University. Dr. Lu is a columnist for the national media including China Business News and the Economy Observer. Recently Dr. Lu joined the INNIO Group in his snr role of Chief Strategic Partnership assisting in developing the company’s growth in the clean and renewable energy application field.

Mr. Jyrki Raina

Global Industrial Relations Expert, Finland
Appointed: 1 January 2020
2nd term expires: 31 December 2025

Jyrki is a global industrial relations expert based in Finland and in Spain. He works in projects in Europe and around the world, focusing on strategy development, research, organising, collective bargaining and mediation.
Jyrki is former General Secretary of IndustriALL Global Union, which represents 50 million workers in 140 countries. He was an architect of the Bangladesh Accord on Fire and Building Safety, which has helped make factories safer for millions of garment workers.
Jyrki is a previous member of the UN Global Compact Board. He holds a Master of Laws from Helsinki University.
